Canada is officially bilingual, which gives you a choice most destinations do not. A document from Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel or Jura is already in French and is accepted as such, particularly in Quebec. For the English-speaking provinces an English translation is the safer route. From a German-speaking canton you will need one of the two either way.
Canada acceded to the Apostille Convention with effect from 11 January 2024, having stayed outside it for decades. Before that date Swiss documents needed authentication and consular legalisation; now a single apostille is enough. If a Canadian office still refers to the old procedure, that is habit rather than law — the Convention applies.
