Apostille for Algeria

Algeria is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention: a single apostille, affixed in Switzerland by the chancellery of the issuing canton, makes your Swiss document valid there โ€” no embassy, no consulate, no further stamp.

Where the apostille is affixed

Always in the country that issued the document โ€” so for your Swiss diploma, extract or certificate, at the state chancellery of the issuing canton, or at the Federal Chancellery for federal documents. We route it; you just name the canton.

Documents typically requested by Algeria

Diplomas and transcripts for jobs and universities, civil-status records for marriages and residence, criminal-record extracts for visas, commercial-register extracts and powers of attorney for business.

Timing and delivery

Standard 1โ€“2 business days plus delivery; same-day express available. Registered Swiss mail included โ€” or DHL straight to Algeria (CHF 140 worldwide, CHF 90 in Europe).

Recent change โ€” apostille since 9 July 2026

The Apostille Convention entered into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026. Before that date, a Swiss document destined for Algeria had to go through the full consular chain: cantonal chancellery, federal level, then the Algerian embassy. That chain is no longer required โ€” a single apostille is enough. Two practical consequences. Documents you had legalised before July 2026 remain valid and do not need redoing. And some Algerian offices may still ask for the old consular stamp out of habit during the transition; if that happens, ask them to confirm in writing, because the Convention now applies.

Translation into Arabic

Algerian authorities work in Arabic. A Swiss document in French, German or Italian will usually need a translation into Arabic, and many Algerian offices want that translation produced by a sworn translator recognised in Algeria rather than in Switzerland. Ask the receiving office which they accept before ordering: the answer changes what we prepare, and redoing a translation costs more than asking.

Frequently asked questions

And a document issued in Algeria, to be used in Switzerland?
Same Convention, opposite direction: the apostille is affixed by the designated authority of Algeria, not in Switzerland. We can point you to the right route there โ€” and once apostilled, the document is accepted by Swiss authorities.
Will Algeria also require a translation?
Frequently, when the document is not in an official language of the destination. The apostille never replaces a translation; mention it in the order notes and our partner network delivers both together.
