Apostille for a Swiss marriage certificate

Foreign employers, universities and registries routinely ask for an apostilled marriage certificate. Here is exactly how it works for this document — and how we take the whole errand off your hands.

Where this document comes from — and which chancellery

Like every Swiss civil status record, a marriage certificate can be issued by any civil registry office in the country, and the apostille follows the canton of the issuing office rather than the place where you married. Foreign registries usually want the marriage certificate itself, not a family certificate — the two are different documents and only one will be accepted.

Original or certified copy?

Neither leaves your hands: a notary establishes a certified true copy from your uploaded PDF or photo, and the apostille is affixed to that copy — included in the price. If a destination exceptionally insists on the apostilled original, tell us and we organise it by registered mail.

Translation often required

An apostille authenticates, it does not translate. If the receiving authority also wants a certified translation of your marriage certificate, mention it in the order notes — our partner network delivers both together.

The mistake that gets files refused

Sending a family certificate when the destination asked for a marriage certificate. It happens constantly, it is caught at the far end, and the apostille has to be redone on the right document. If the request is in a language you do not read, send it to us before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

We married abroad — can Switzerland apostille that certificate?
No. An apostille is always affixed in the country that issued the document. A marriage certificate from Italy is apostilled by the Italian authority. If the marriage was later recorded in the Swiss register, we can obtain and apostille the Swiss record instead.
Which countries accept an apostilled marriage certificate?
All 130 Hague Convention Contracting Parties — from Germany to Brazil to China. For non-members (UAE, Qatar, Egypt…), the consular chain replaces the apostille; order normally and we quote the embassy stage first.
How long for a marriage certificate?
Standard 1–2 business days from receipt, mostly the chancellery’s own turnaround. Same-day express doubles the service price and jumps every queue.
